Lactarius colorascens Pk. Cap 2.5-5cm across, nearly flat, becoming centrally depressed; whitish when young, becoming brownish red with age; moist, smooth. Gills adnate or slightly decurrent, close, thin; whitish, becoming yellowish with age. Stem 25-35 x 3-5mm, solid, even; whitish, becoming brownish red with age. Flesh pallid. Latex white, changing to sulphur yellow on exposure to air. Odor normal. Taste bitter, hottish. Spores broadly ellipsoid, 6-7.5 x 5-6µ; ornamented with warts and short ridges, sometimes forming a broken reticulum, prominences up to 0.5µ high. Deposit whitish. Habitat in mixed woods. Found in eastern North America. Season August-September. Edibility not known-avoid. |
